FAO reports double-digit growth in Iran’s wheat output

Figures by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) show production of wheat rose significantly in Iran in the agricultural year of 2022.
Figures published in FAO’s global food outlook report showed that Iran produced around 13 million tons of wheat in 2022, up 25% from last year. The report said increased output enabled Iran to cut back on its wheat imports bill as shipments dropped 37% to 5 million tons this year.

-- Iran’s annual export to Iraq expected to hit $10b

Iran’s annual export to Iraq is predicted to hit $10 billion in the current Iranian year (to end March 20, 2023), said Yahya Al-e Es’haq, the chairman of Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce
Iran exported $8.916 billion worth of commodities to its neighbor in the year to March 20, making Iraq the Islamic Republic’s second-biggest trade partner.

--Oldest photography studio in Tehran

The oldest photography studio in Tehran, Photo Tahami, with a high ceiling, a wooden door, and stained glass windows, is located in Baharestan Square. A collection of old photographs of Tehran kept in the studio helped turned it to a photo museum.
Javad Tahami was the founder of the studio. He learned photography from Mashallah Khan-e Akkas, Jahangir Khan Mosavar Rahmani and Asadullah Parvin. He established the studio at Amin Hozour intersection of Tehran in 1928, but transferred it to Baharestan Square in 1944, said his grandson, Siavash, in an exclusive interview with Iran Daily.

-- Spokesman: Iran Air to Add 5 Aircraft

Iran Air spokesman Hessam Qorbanali has said that the country’s flag carrier Iran Air is planning to increase its active fleet size within the next few months despite difficulties facing the airline because of U.S. sanctions on Iran.
Qorbanali said five aircraft will be added to the airline’s active fleet until the end of the Iranian calendar year in late March.
Iran Air’s current active fleet consists of 17 aircraft, including eight Airbus planes, said Qorbanali.

-- Iran’s Kalhor Wins Bronze at 2022 World Taekwondo Championships

Reza Kalhor of Iran has claimed a bronze medal in the -68kg category of the 2022 World Taekwondo Championships. Kwon Do-yun stunned defending champion Bradly Sinden of Britain to capture gold at the Centro Acuático CODE Metropolitano.
Mehran Barkhordari of Iran had already won a bronze in the -80kg. Barkhordari in the weight category of -80kgdefeated his Canadian rival in two rounds and advance to quarter-finals. In quarterfinals, he overpowered Mongolia and advanced to the semi-final stage.

-- Iran, Turkey Discuss Cooperation to Fight Terrorism

The interior ministers of Iran and Turkey have debated plans for cooperation between the two neighbors in the fight against terrorism and in ensuring security along the common border.
In a telephone conversation on Thursday, Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi and his Turkish counterpart Suleyman Soylu discussed plans for joint action by the two countries in the war on terrorism, promoting the bilateral and regional cooperation, the extradition of criminals, and countering drug trafficking.

--Iran to organize intl. conference on Oriental manuscripts

Scholars will come together in Tehran and Qom in the spring of 2023 to discuss Oriental manuscripts during an international meeting. The Center for Islamic Documents and Manuscripts (Majma-e Zakhayer-e Eslami) and the History of Science and Culture Institute in Qom are the main organizers of the International Conference on Oriental Manuscripts.

The conference is scheduled to be held in three stages, the first was organized last Wednesday as part of the programs arranged for the 30th edition of the Iran Book Week.

-- Iran’s govt. records lowest expenditure in West Asia: IMF

International Monetary Fund (IMF), in a recent ranking of the world’s governments based on the ratio of their expenditure to gross domestic product (GDP), has put Iran in sixth place among 188 countries reviewed.

The fund has estimated the ratio of the Iranian government’s expenditure to the country’s GDP in 2022 at 12.517 percent. Based on the IMF data, the Iranian government has had the lowest expenditure among the West Asian nations in 2022.

-- Miankaleh wetland holds potential to become intl. tourism hub

Developing the Miankaleh wetland in the northern province of Mazandaran into an international tourism destination is possible, the province’s governor has said. Nature tourism will be the biggest attraction of this wetland for both national and foreign tourists, Seyyed Mahmoud Hosseinipur said on Saturday.

This area is an ideal place for investors, as they can increase their capacity under the supervision of the province’s Environment Department and in collaboration with other government bodies, the official added.
